Megadimension Neptunia VII may mark the Hyperdimension Neptunia seriesโ PS4 debut, but if youโve ever played any of the previous mainline games, whether on PS3 or Vita, youโll have a good idea what to expect. All the usual stuff is here: JRPG tropes galore, lots of referential video game humour, and seemingly endless amounts of expository infodumps doubling as plot progression. If none of the previous games have won you over, thereโs nothing here that will make you re-evaluate your opinion.
In fact, this is probably more true for Megadimension Neptunia VII than it has been of any of the previous games: thereโs just so much more of Hyperdimension Neptunia here than there ever has been. Just take a gander at the gameโs Wikipedia plot summary: thatโs over 6,000 words. Megadimension Neptunia VII brings together three separate stories, which basically means youโre getting three times as much Hyperdimension Neptunia as youโd normally get.
Thatโs a lot of Hyperdimension Neptunia. And, to be frank, itโs a lot more than I can take. Iโm fond of the series when it breaks out of its mold and tries new things (which is why Iโm really looking forward to next monthโs MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies). Megadimension Neptunia VII doesnโt do that. Megadimension Neptunia VII throws lots and lots of exposition at you, intermittently breaks it up with a few rounds of turn-based battles, and โ eventually โ calls it a day.
Like I said, if you havenโt already fallen for the series, youโre probably not going to have your mind changed here. Conversely, if youโve loved the previous entries in the series, youโre probably going to be over the moon for Megadimension Neptunia VII, since this is the series blown up to its most massive size yet. Personally, I donโt have the patience for it (as I said, Iโll be over here waiting for MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune), but if youโve stuck with the series this far, youโre absolutely going to love it on PS4.
