Announced via Oculus blog today, the Oculus Rift VR headset will open for pre-orders on January 6, marking the first opportunity for purchases of the retail unit. no pricing was announced.
The Oculus Rift was announced to come with a free copy of the platformer Lucky’s Tale, and those who pre-order the headset will receive EVE: Valkyrie as well.
A Reddit AMA thread is planned for later in the day Wednesday (at 6 PST) to provide an opportunity for both questions and answers about Oculus, the Rift headset, and likely plans for the future.
UPDATE – In a Reddit thread related to today’s announcement, Palmer Luckey has explained the lack of pricing information in advance of pre-orders:
“This is standard practice in the consumer electronics industry. The price is almost always announced alongside preorders. Phones, game consoles, they all do it this way – it is kind of weird to see people thinking it is some kind of special sign about anything!”
