The closest comparison I can give you is probably the Final Fantasy 7 Remake titles’ Active Time Battle combat system. You’ll be attacking, parrying, and using special moves to dispatch your enemies, but you’ll enter a slow-down state while you navigate your menus to pick an ability. Seeing Game Freak develop such a drastically different title is interesting, and with the release on the horizon, videos like these showing off more of the systems only serves to further drum up interest.
They also mention that Emma and Koo (the protagonist and the magic forest wolf) will gain new skills and techniques as you defeat bosses, allowing more player experimentation and freedom with a wide variety of playstyles and build combinations. Build combinations means there’s the potential for the certified classic “big stick” strength build, but time will tell.
