To be honest, there’s not a lot to say about EvoCreo 2 that I didn’t say earlier this year about EvoCreo. Like the first game, it’s a PC port of a mobile game that doesn’t just owe a huge debt to Pokémon, it basically is Pokémon, just with enough tweaks here and there that Nintendo can’t sue.

But, much like the first EvoCreo, just because EvoCreo 2 isn’t remotely original that doesn’t make it any less fun if you’re in the mood for a monster-catching game. It’s a game that understands that Pokémon pretty much perfected the genre a few decades ago, so it just tries to replicate that formula without getting in the way.

In fact, EvoCreo 2 probably does that better than the first game, even if the improvements are hardly groundbreaking. The pixel-art visuals are a little nicer and a little more refined. The world is larger, and the story gives you more reason to explore more of it. There’s a greater variety of monsters to capture, and they have a greater number of attacks to learn. There’s even multiplayer this time around – though given I couldn’t find anyone online while playing the game and the top-ranked players don’t seem to have too many matches, I don’t think I’d recommend it if that’s what you’re after.

But if you want a solid, well-made Pokémon imitator, EvoCreo 2 delivers on that front. It may not be a huge departure – either from the first EvoCreo, or from Pokémon. But if you just want to explore a pixel world and catch monsters, EvoCreo 2 has exactly what you’re looking for.

Ilmfinity Studios provided us with an EvoCreo 2 PC code for review purposes.
