Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls reveals its intro movie as well as its first DLC character

Yesterday at San Diego Comic Con, PlayStation and Arc System Works hosted the panel Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls – Behind the Battle in which we (and by we I mean attendees, as SDCC does not offer livestreams of their panel programming) learned more about the upcoming tag fighter featuring a brand new universe envisioned by the Japanese developer.

While we’ll never really know what was discussed on the panel unless host Sajam does a re-cap on his own livestream, two videos did debut late this afternoon. The first is the opening movie of the game, animated by the animation house Sanzigen (Who worked on another Arc Sys property in the form of Guilty Gear: Dual Rulers), directed by Daisuke Suzuki and featuring the track “Stronger as One” as performed by Keiko Terada (SHOW-YA) and mayu (NEMOPHILA). This clip certainly gives us a glimpse of the world of MARVEL Tōkon. The Green Goblin’s public persona, Norman Osborne is running for president and the Hulk is enjoying his exile in the savage land (yes, I’m only covering the details about “green” characters). Stronger as One is quite a high energy track and I can definitely see myself listening to it more than once before I ceremonially return to skipping the opening movie so I can get to the action quickly.

The second video that was released revealed the first character on the game’s year one DLC and it’s a souped up version of everyone’s punch beam firing mutant…Phoenix Cyclops. Before I detail the character, can we commend whatever PR agency Scott hired to raise his profile so much in 2026. The man literally has been plastered across marvel media from getting his proper look in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, his fashionably late debut in Marvel Rivals, Marvel Cosmic Invasion and well as strong showing in X-Men 97 season two.

For those who aren’t quite familiar with the iteration of Cyclops coming to Marvel Tōkon, you can refer to the 2012 crossover story Avengers vs. X-Men. In which an attempt to stop the phoenix force from returning to Earth causes the cosmic entity to split and manifest itself into the bodies of Colossus, Magik, Emma Frost, Namor the Sub Mariner and of course Cyclops. Given that Cyclops no longer wields this power, you can safely assume this episode didn’t end well for everyone involved. However it will be interesting to see how Arc System Works incorporate Scott’s base powers as well as these temporary, but nigh-omnipotent powers. Surely we’ll get  a character guide video like every member of the cast revealed so far.

For those looking to get their hands on the title, but couldn’t make it to SDCC, fret not! The game is hosting an open beta that is set to kick off on July 24th on both PC and PlayStation 5. While Phoenix Cyclops won’t be playable you will be able to construct a team with 16 out of the game’s 20 character base roster and hone your skills before this cosmically empowered leader of the X-Men arrives on the scene.

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls will decide the fate of Earth when it comes to PC and PlayStation 5 on August 6th, 2026. The game’s Year 1 DLC will kick off sometime this Fall.
