If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to woo and coo at the same time — and really, who among us hasn’t? — Devolver Digital and Mediatonic have decided it’s time your question is answered, with the announcement that they’ll be remaking Hatoful Boyfriend for PC and Mac this summer.
Originally released as a visual novel in Japan in 2011, the game garnered a cult following on this side of the Pacific. YouTube is full of playthroughs in both the original Japanese and English fan translations, and a whole fanfiction subgenere has sprung up around the game as well.
If you’re wondering exactly what the game is about, the press release has you covered:
As the only human in St. PigeoNation?s prestigious school for birds you?ll encounter a feathered cast of characters and choose a suitable love interest all while managing elective school classes. Follow your heart as you choose your path and go on romantic dates, but be wary of fowl twists and turns along the way that could turn your love life upside down. There has literally never been a pigeon dating visual novel like Hatoful Boyfriend before.
As for why they’re bring the game over now — apart from the obvious reason of “Why the heck not?” — the wonderfully-named Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker says, “Our research shows that consumer fatigue for space marines and dragons is at an all-time high — gamers are ready for something new and fresh. Semi-realistic pigeon dating simulations are the next great frontier in video games.”
More details to come, but the Hatoful Boyfriend will launch later this summer on PC and Mac via Steam, GOG, Humble, and other digital storefronts. Keep reading for some screenshots!
