Minecraft for Xbox 360 surpasses 12 million sold

Minecraft-LogoThe Minecraft train keeps on chugging along, and today Mojang and Microsoft have announced that the Xbox 360 version has topped 12 million copies/downloads.

Priced at $20 as a digital and disc-based release, Minecraft has insane legs, and thereโ€™s not many players that havenโ€™t spent a few hours toying with the game โ€” especially the under 13 crowd.

Selling that many copies makes Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition one of the best selling Xbox 360 games of all time. When all is said and done, itโ€™s possible it will nudge past Call of Duty: Black Ops, Halo 3 and Grand Theft Auto V.

Read on for a little Q&A from the Xbox Wire with Daniel Kaplan from Mojang.

Just in case you were one of the six people on the planet who didnโ€™t know this already: Mojangโ€™s โ€œMinecraftโ€ is kind of a big deal. In fact, the critically acclaimed โ€œMinecraft: Xbox 360 Editionโ€ just crossed the 12 million sold mark โ€” making it one of the most successful Xbox 360 games ever. Of course, the โ€œMinecraftโ€ brain trust still has plenty of surprises in store for diehard โ€œMinecraft: Xbox 360 Editionโ€ fans, including the April 18 release of the new Candy Texture Pack.

Curious as ever, we recently chatted with Mojangโ€™s Daniel Kaplan to discuss the gameโ€™s big milestone and its next-gen future!

Xbox Wire: 12 million is an awfully big number! How does it feel to be one of the best-selling Xbox 360 titles of all-time?

Daniel Kaplan: It is pretty amazing! I remember when we started talking about sales numbers that we would be super happy to sell 1 million copies. That would have put us on par with BF1943 and Castle Crashers, which both are awesome games, so that was something to aim for. We never even dreamed of selling 12 million!

Xbox Wire: Are there any sweet new packs in the works for โ€œMinecraft: Xbox 360 Edition?โ€

Daniel: Of course! Weโ€™re looking forward to creating mashups with other games. The Marvel collaboration is a great start and something we want to continue doing.

Xbox Wire: What has impressed you most about the โ€œMinecraftโ€ community on Xbox 360?

Daniel: The continued support and the fact that people are still able to surprise us with innovative creations. Considering you can?t โ€œcheatโ€ by building stuff with external tools, the community have created incredible things.

Xbox Wire: What?s the most requested feature addition for โ€œMinecraft: Xbox 360 Editionโ€ from users?

Daniel: Probably bigger worlds. Weโ€™re pushing the limitations of the 360 in various different ways and we will continue doing that. However, bigger worlds would require the guarantee of a hard drive on each 360; since not all 360โ€™s ship with hard drives that makes things tricky. Luckily, on Xbox One, thatโ€™s not an issue.

Xbox Wire: Which โ€œMinecraft: Xbox 360 Editionโ€ achievement are you most proud of unlocking?

Daniel: Getting Wood!

Xbox Wire: What?s the most amazing thing you?ve seen created in โ€œMinecraft: Xbox 360 Edition?โ€

Daniel: This is crazy!

Xbox Wire: So, any big news on the โ€œMinecraft: Xbox One Editionโ€ front?

Daniel: It is coming, eventually!
