The power of the Phoenix will burn all when it arrives in MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls on November 2nd

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls has shown the world what the Marvel Universe would look like if it was created by the folks at Arc System Works. Soon we will see yet another Marvel Classic as envisioned by the creative forces behind Guilty Gear.

The man who was one of Professor Xavier’s earliest students, who grew into a capable leader of mutantkind is now imbued by the cosmic powers of Phoenix Force. However It seems like the old adage “absolute power corrupts absolutely”, this empowered version of Scott Summers has turned on his comrades and has simply taken on the mantle of Savior of Mutantkind upon himself.

In a new blog post on the PlayStation Blog, the title’s producer Takeshi Yamanaka opened the curtain and gave the public insight on why Phoenix Cyclops was chosen as the game’s first post-release character as well as their approach on how to make the character distinct from his previous fighting game outings.

Usage of his signature Optic Blasts will allow him to accrue Solar Shards and when 4 has been *ahem* assembled, will enable him to transform into the Dark Phoenix Form. Scott gains increased powers and certain moves are imbued with scorching fire, but his health will gradually deplete, thus forcing you to make quick work against your foes less your own flame snuffs out.

Mr. Yamanaka also extended an olive branch to those who want classic interpretations of these iconic Marvel characters by announcing that Cyclops will release with costume featuring the famous Jim Lee Interpretation of the character which debuted in 1991’s X-Men #1. So players can expect “Classic” or “Legacy” costumes for characters in the future.

Players can get their hands on Phoenix Cyclops at the MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls booth at EVO France, which is taking place this weekend in Nice, France from October 9th to the 11th. If I know how the game has been exhibited, I expect players to be sporting Phoenix Cyclops pins after having checked out the character this upcoming weekend. For the rest of us, Phoenix Cyclops will descend into the game on November 2nd as part of the Deluxe version of the title or as a standalone purchase.

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is available now on PC and PlayStation 5.
