Bungie announces final Destiny 2 live-service content update

The end of an era is almost nigh.  One of our favorite live service titles, Bungie’s Destiny 2 of course, will officially be coming to a close on June 9th, 2026 after nearly a decade.

What does this mean? Well, like the original Destiny (which has had sort of a resurgence of interest lately), Destiny 2 will still be playable indefinitely, though active development on it cease.  The state of the game will be essentially locked down, and there will be no more new content, season passes and whatnot released for the title.   That’s the high-level bad/good news.

The good/interesting news is that Sparrow racing is finally coming back and will forever be a part of the game experience (one of our favorite Destiny pastimes), along with quite a few other quality of life changes such as the return of the Director interface, Gambit Ops and Pantheon 2.0 modes, changes to rewards & economy, and updates for sandbox & gear, all which are designed to provide access to more of the game for players once the live-service wraps up.

See a breakdown of some of the changes below and at the official Destiny blog.

Core Gameplay & Activities

  • The Return of the Director: The classic Director returns as the primary hub for all activities, moving “Portal” activities to specific nodes at the bottom of the screen.

  • Sparrow Racing League (SRL): A permanent return for SRL, featuring tracks from the original Destiny and a brand-new racing space, complete with unique gear and cosmetics (including horns).

  • Pantheon 2.0: A permanent boss-rush mode. It launches with two initial activities on June 9, expands to a full “Gauntlet” on June 13, and begins featured boss rotations on June 16.

  • Gambit Ops: Gambit is being elevated to an “Ops” category with refreshed rewards, new armor sets, and reprised weapons.

  • Crucible Updates: * New Mode – Arena: Focused on traditional gunplay.

    • Private Match Modes: “Glass Cannon” (D1-style balance) and “Software” (Third-person, abilities-only).

    • Heavy Metal: Returns with a new Cabal Walker vehicle type and a dedicated map.

Rewards & Economy

  • Legendary Marks: This legacy currency returns, earnable through game-wide Triumphs to purchase free armor ornaments, weapon engrams, and more.

  • Monument of Triumph Vendor: Seasonal events (Festival of the Lost, Dawning, etc.) are being retired; their rewards will now be accessible through this centralized vendor.

  • Exotic Armor Transmog: Starting June 9, you can apply any legendary or lower-tier ornament to Exotic armor pieces in PvE environments.

  • Eververse Overhaul: Bright Dust rotations will now update daily. A new Bright Engram Focusing system allows you to target specific categories and guarantees no duplicates.

  • Updated Rewards Pass: Includes a new Exotic Hand Cannon and an increased number of cosmetic rewards.

Sandbox & Gear

  • New Abilities:

    • Aspects: Solar Hunter (Crackshot), Void Warlock (Soul Siphon), and Solar Titan (Shieldburst).

    • Melee/Grenades: Void Hunter (Phantom Surge), Strand Slicewire Grenade, and Stasis Shatter Grenade.

  • Raid & Dungeon Refresh: All raid/dungeon gear has been updated to modern standards with set bonuses and new perks. Crafted weapons can now be upgraded through Tiers 1–5.

  • Exotic Upgrades: All Exotic armor earned since The Edge of Fate will automatically jump to Tier 5 stats. Various weapons will receive new Catalysts and tuning passes.

  • Destination “Distortions”: New localized challenges on planets that offer unique rewards.

For almost twelve years, we have had the joy and honor to explore the Destiny universe with you all. Through all the ups and downs, surprises and triumphs, building Destiny alongside our players has been a monumental privilege. While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2.

As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio.

Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. Many changes in this final update will aim to ensure that Destiny 2 is a welcoming place for players to return to.

We’re proud of Destiny 2, the places it took us, and the legacy it has created. Because of you all, our universe is vast, built on years of shared stories, adventures, and victories. From the Cosmodrome to the Pale Heart to the Lawless Frontier, we have forged life-long memories and friendships with you all.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made that journey with us.

From the deepest part of our hearts, thank you, and we’ll see you in the stars.
