Finally, after 6 long years, 4A Games has dropped their first trailer to show off a tease of what we can expect in the upcoming Metro 2039 release. Showcasing a large chunk of beautiful cinematics before falling into a very brief bit of gameplay, you’ll get a brief introduction to the new protagonist, currently simply known as “The Stranger”. The Stranger is the first time in the series you will get to play as a fully voiced character, shedding Artyom’s stoic silence and giving you more immersion as a character within the world. Where Artyom only spoke in loading screens, recounting diary entries, The Stranger will be fully integrated with the world and the characters within.
The Stranger is, as the trailer showcases, a man haunted by nightmares. Within the trailer, we witness him trudging through strange, liminal worlds. A tree dropping a child’s drawings of his family before he notices that he is chained to a young girl, then being consumed by a writhing mass of chains that the ground has become. Falling out of the chain mass into a shadowy liminal playground, he sees children being led by chain, forcibly pulled along into locked jail carts on a train. He runs, only to once again realize he himself is chained. Falling only to look up and find himself yet again another world. Teases that the trailer leaves unexplained to keep you wanting more.
Is he one of the children? Are one or more of the children his? What is the drawing of the family, and who are the captors? It leaves as many questions unanswered as it posits in the first place. And… that’s great! I love Metro as a series. One that has somehow consistently only gone uphill with each subsequent release, Metro did exactly what it needed to keep your mind on them. I know from watching this trailer that I will be eagerly awaiting full release, which is currently being listed as simply “Coming this winter”. I know I for one will be jumping in as soon as possible, with little doubt in my mind that 4A will drop yet another amazing experience. Until then, I will probably be playing back through Metro 2033 and Last Light’s amazingly redone Redux releases as well as both Exodus and the VR release, Metro: Awakening.
