PlayStation TV coming to North America on October 14th

PlayStation TV (formerly PS Vita TV) is a curious little device that will apparently do quite a lot for PlayStation gamers out there. It’s essentially a PS Vita without a screen or a built-in controller, but it can play many PS Vita games, PSP games, PSone Classics, stream PlayStation Now PS3 titles, and remote play PS4 games to another TV in your house. All that for $99, or $139 if you need/want a controller, a Vita memory card and a copy of the The LEGO Movie Videogame.

The PS TV will also stream video via Netflix or Youtube or many of the other video services available on the Vita. So yeah, it does quite a bit, in theory.

Today, for those interested, Sony has revealed North American release date, prices and game library which will be available on day 1. Obviously games built around the Vita’s touch controls or camera will not be compatible, but the library has been confirmed to top 700 games, all included. Sony has confirmed that a PS3 DualShock 3 or a PS4 DualShock 4 will work with the device.

Walmart is getting a special bundle which also includes Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time in addition to the rest of the bundle contents.  Amazon already has the PlayStation TV available to pre-order, right here.

Sony included the following as an example of PS TV compatible  titles.  Stop by the official site for the full list of compatible titles.

  • Rayman Origins
  • Persona 4 Golden
  • God of War Collection
  • Killzone: Mercenary
  • FINAL FANTASY X / X-2 HD Remaster
  • Dragon?s Crown
  • Spelunky
  • FINAL FANTASY TACTICS: WAR OF THE LIONS
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Patapon
  • Twisted Metal
  • Borderlands 2
  • Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom

Other details on what games will be playable, from the PS Blog:

PS TV plays select content from PlayStation systems past and present, including:

  • PlayStation Vita ? PS TV plays select titles from PS Vita, which can either be downloaded to the device or inserted directly into the system using a PS Vita card.
  • PlayStation Classics ? Download classic games from PS One and PlayStation Portable, like Wipeout and Metal Gear Solid.
  • PlayStation 3 ? Our game streaming service PS Now is coming to PS TV, which will let you play many PS3 games on the device over the Internet*.
  • PlayStation 4 ? If you?re a PS4 owner, use Remote Play to stream a remote play enabled PS4 game from your console to a PS TV over a wired internet connection. If the living room is tied up, just use Remote Play to send your PS4 game up to the bedroom and keep playing on PS TV.
