Pok?mon X and Pok?mon Y top 4 million units worldwide

Based on the swift worldwide sales of Pok?mon X and Pok?mon Y, there must have been an awful lot of pent up demand for a new Pok?mon game.

The brand new 3DS installment of the best-selling Nintendo series has already topped 4 million units in Japan, parts of Europe, and North and South America. This pace puts it as the fastest selling Nintendo 3DS game so far.

Check out the figures and more details in Nintendo’s press release below.

On Saturday, Oct. 12, Pok?mon X and Pok?mon Y for Nintendo 3DS became the first set of games in franchise history to launch simultaneously worldwide. Nintendo reported today that the games combined to sell more than 4 million units across Japan, Europe* and The Americas on Saturday, Oct. 12, and Sunday, Oct. 13.

?The early response to Pok?mon X and Pok?mon Y not only reaffirms the ongoing passion of Pok?mon fans, but also indicates that an entirely new generation of gamers is eager to experience the franchise for itself,? said Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.

Since this was the first global launch in franchise history, there isn?t an exact historical precedent for comparison. However, when combining and comparing regional data for previous launches, Pok?mon X andPok?mon Y would be the fastest-selling Nintendo 3DS games of all time and are tracking ahead of the last Pok?mon RPG titles, Pok?mon Black 2 and Pok?mon White 2, by more than 70 percent.

With more than 245 million** games sold worldwide, the Pok?mon franchise continues to be one of the strongest brands in the history of video games. Since 2002, five sets of Pok?mon titles have combined to exceed 10 million units sold to date worldwide, with three sets combining to surpass 15 million units. That list includes:

Title Platform Total Global Sales
Pok?mon Diamond and Pok?mon Pearl Nintendo DS 17.63 Million
Pok?mon Ruby and Pok?mon Sapphire Game Boy Advance 16.22 Million
Pok?mon Black and Pok?mon White Nintendo DS 15.42 Million
Pok?mon HeartGold and Pok?mon SoulSilver Nintendo DS 12.67 Million
Pok?mon FireRed and Pok?mon LeafGreen Game Boy Advance 12 Million

*Data from Europe primarily covers Saturday, Oct. 12, as the great majority of retail outlets are closed on Sundays across Europe.
