For reasons I’ve never fully understood, people pretend to love Garfield games. I know it’s a meme at this point, but if you check the reviews for the likes of Garfield Kart and Garfield Lasagna Party, it’s mainly over-the-top raves with the odd bit of truth sneaking through.
Weirdly, Garfield – Escape from Monday doesn’t have this issue. If you check the Steam reviews at the moment, there are obviously some meme reviews, but it’s mostly people talking about the game honestly – which is to say, they’re describing it as an okay 3D platformer that’s a little too easy and that doesn’t do anything groundbreaking, but that it generally works. Could there be an inverse relationship between the praise a Garfield game gets and its actual quality? I don’t know that we need a unified theory of Garfield game critiques, but…maybe!
In any case, what you see with Garfield – Escape from Monday is exactly what you’re getting. It gives you pretty generic food-themed worlds to jump around in, and it generally funnels you from point A to point B with a minimum of fuss. There are the odd points where you can stop to look around and find hidden treasures, but for the most part, it’s not a game that expects or demands you to explore. It’s not bad or badly made, but it’s pretty lacking in anything resembling inspiration.
The only genuinely bad thing here is the voice acting. There’s not a lot of it, thankfully, but for some reason the developers decided that they wanted to create a Garfield who sounded extra campy, and it just sounds weird.
Is that enough to sink the game? Hardly. But there’s also nothing here that brings it to very high heights, either. If you just need to play a 3D platformer Garfield – Escape from Monday will do, but it’s about as far from essential as it gets.
Microids provided us with a Garfield – Escape from Monday PC code for review purposes.
