It’s been a while since we’ve seen Sid Shuman, Shawne Benson, Kristen Zitani, but on September 3rd we got to see them again as PlayStation offered their September 2026 edition of State of Play, a showcase which features first and third party titles coming to PlayStation platforms.
The program started by flipping the script, showing us a clip of Not Chris/Not Leon as he navigates the desolate streets of Raccoon City avoiding zombie precipitation as the undead leap from buildings in a futile attempt to reach the medical courier who is the focus of the film. After the clip, we cut to director Zach Cregger in which he gives us the brass tacks and urges the viewer to watch the movie when it comes out on 9/18/26.
As far as video games are concerned, Wolverine leads the pack where we see an action filled trailer in which we are presented with a volley of familiar faces with new looks, Sabretooth, Mystique, Omega Red, Bolivar Trask and an Asian auntie version of Lady Deathstrike (Insomniac is never gonna beat the ugly women accusations…are they?). Thankfully you won’t have to wait long to experience the origins of the Sentinels as Wolverine will be clawing his way to the PlayStation 5 in a mere 12 days on September 15th.
Next we see that Sucker Punch will be adding to Ghost of Yōtei with Most Wanted, a single player mode which seems to be run based which will see the return of Jin Sakai, the protagonist of Ghost of Tsushima. This mode along with the expansion Echoes of Sekigahara will form Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition.
Following two first party titles we are treated to somewhat lengthy looks at Monster Hunter Wilds’ upcoming expansion Ascendance and Metro 2039. But it’s the next announcement which piqued my interest…2020’s shARkPG Maneater gets a sequel with SNL alum Chris Parnell returning to portray the game’s sardonic narrator!
This is the part where I’m gonna skip around a bit unless you really want to read pages and pages of play by play. If you’ve owned a LEGO Nintendo, LEGO Atari 2600, LEGO SEGA Genesis, you can add a 32bit console to your blocky collection as the original PlayStation gets immortalized by Danish toy designers…if you’re not a discriminating brick collector, you can probably add the Mega Bloks Xbox 360.
Final Fantasy Resonance gets a demo whose progress can be taken to the final release. Gundam: Rogue Orbit shows off that the iconic franchise can mix up its combat with a more aggressive heavy melee style. Double Fine, who just secured their freedom from Microsoft already, are making moves with their Microsoft-era output by releasing their Lighthouse-themed adventure title Keeper.
The biggest surprise of the show for me has to be Rhapsody in Scarlet, before its title was revealed it was giving quite the Shadow Hearts-vibes, but then I realized the game already covered turn of the century America with Shadow Hearts: From the New World, but Rhapsody in Scarlet has just as interesting a concept, it’s Wizards vs the Mafia and the game managed to secure airtime in 3 showcases (State of Play, State of Play 日 本 and Konami Press Start), so it’s definitely a title you should keep an eye on.
We get details on Gran Turismo 7 updates to which our very own Brendan declared “ Do people still care about Gran Turismo?”. Meanwhile I was so indifferent to the Until Dawn 2 section that I actually missed the announcement for the Grand Theft Auto VI Limited Edition DualSense. While I love the franchise from Rockstar Games…I doubt I will have to fight folks to buy these white or black controllers.

At roughly the 40 minute mark, we begin to close out the first half of our State of Play Double Feature with Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Revelation. We get plenty of info on the game’s mechanics, locations, product SKUs and most importantly a release date!
Then we get the hand off to voice actor Yuki Kaji as we shift our focus to Japanese titles and the first is a look at the character customization in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 where the title reveals a brand new race your character can hail from with the introduction of the Android Race. The second title shown definitely is a Japanese-centric title (I know Fate has a fandom in the west, but I don’t think it’s as large as we think) as we learn a remake of 2010’s Fate/Extra Record. It wouldn’t be a State of Play without a Dragon Quest trailer and the game that gets the honor is Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World.
Popular anime franchise Blue Lock gets a collaboration with Sloclap’s arcade soccer title Rematch. We get another look at Gundam: Rogue Orbit when producer Yuya Tomiyama sat down with our host to discuss the title. The zany undead title Stupid Never Dies reveals a playable demo ahead of its late October release date. DLC for Echoes of Aincrad and Digimon Story Time Stranger is revealed, we get another look at Rhapsody in Scarlet and the Japanese showcase ends with an American developed title in Ghost of Yōtei where Fairouz Ai talks shop about voicing Atsu, the protagonist of the game.
So ends another showcase where I’m sure there will absolutely be no complaints. Personally I certainly enjoyed the reveals of Maneater 2, Rhapsody in Scarlet, the announcements of demos for upcoming titles such as Final Fantasy Resonance and Stupid Never Die. If you want to revisit specific aspects of the showcase, here’s a list of chapters from the clip itself, transcribed to this article to extend its length! Until Next time!
