Rita review for PC

I’m a huge fan of word games. I love 3D platformers. It’s never crossed my mind that the two genres could ever be mixed together. And yet: Rita exists.

I mean, it’s not a perfect marriage. It’s neither a great 3D platformer nor a great word game. But, at the very least, it’s good enough at both halves of that equation that I have no problem saying that I enjoyed it.

But I would say that unless you have the same very specific tastes as me, you may want to tread carefully before diving into the world of Rita.

In part, this is because the world of Rita can be an odd, frustrating place. The titular hero – a chicken who wears glasses – moves a little slowly, and even if her world isn’t enormous it’s big enough that you may find yourself dreading any time you need to go between two places that aren’t quite close to each other.

It also doesn’t help that her ability to jump is pretty limited. Admittedly, the game eventually allows you to launch yourself into the air (via well-placed springs) and glide a little, but the mechanics can be a little iffy, requiring you to jump in just the right place and at just the right angle. The game never makes it impossible, but there are certainly places where you’ll find yourself getting annoyed at the game.

Things are a little better in terms of Rita as a word game. There’s a good mix of crossword puzzles, rebuses, Wordles, word searches, and other similar puzzles. I can’t say any of them were all that difficult, but there’s at least enough variety that you won’t find yourself bored by the game. That said, the less-than-perfect platforming has an impact on the word games, since you need to search all over the world to find the letters you’ll need to solve the world puzzles.

As I said, though, even with Rita’s shortcomings, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I liked it. It may only appeal to very specific tastes, but if you have those tastes – and I certainly do – it’s probably worth checking out.
