Granblue Fantasy: Relink Endless Ragnarok review for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch 2

Granblue Fantasy is one of those IPs that’s always sorta had me passively interested. Between the art style, some of the music I’d heard, and some of the characters, it drew me in enough to be mostly aware of it and eventually give the fighting game (Granblue Fantasy: Versus) a try when that was released. It then spurred a realization that Cygames really does make some great stuff, which was further evident when they released Granblue Fantasy: Relink a couple years back. Fast forward to this summer, and it got a re-release via the Endless Ragnarok version. After having spent so much time with it, I’m surprised I haven’t heard more people talk about Granblue Fantasy: Relink.

The biggest aspect of Relink that really had me interested and made me wanna sink time into it was the combat. From the outside looking in it seemed very action-oriented with your big skills on cooldown. After getting to sink my teeth into it, it’s more enjoyable than I originally thought. Each character has their own unique style of combo string that can be ended early or done until you get a big “combo finisher” attack, their own unique mechanics such as a block that functions like a parry, and a whole set of skills to pick and choose from.

From toying around with a bunch of the cast, I’ve definitely found my favorites to play, and there’s still some characters added with the Endless Ragnarok expansion I’ve yet to get around to. The game’s combat systems are just plain fun and feel satisfying to get good at even if they’re not superbly complex. There’s an endgame grind you can really throw yourself into with optional quests and bosses if you’re really wanting to push yourself.

The game’s gorgeous, but I think you can figure that out from even just the trailers. The best way I can describe the visuals of Granblue Fantasy: Relink are that of a painting in motion. For those that remember when The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was originally being advertised, they spoke a lot about that game’s visual style being derivative of a specific painter, and you get a feeling very similar to that with this game. I’m a sucker for a gorgeous world, especially with a complementing art direction, and Cygames completely nails this here. From the standard looking towns of the floating sky islands to the frozen mountains and beyond, everything is nothing short of eye candy.

One of the big things that might cause some commotion from certain players is the difference of main story content compared to all the optional content. Now, I’m not saying this game has a bad story or anything, because that’d just be lying, but I am saying that the main story (pre-Endless Ragnarok) is a small fraction of the total content that Relink has to offer. This latest Endless Ragnarok version of Granblue Fantasy: Relink adds another several hours of new story content, an entirely new single player mode separate from said story, and more. From characters to bosses to co-op quests, there is a lot added with this expansion. It also marks the release of Relink for the Nintendo Switch 2 for players that want it on the go!

My point being there is that if you’re looking into Granblue Fantasy: Relink and the Endless Ragnarok expansion, make sure you’re aware it’s very extra content focused. Think of the main story as a tutorial before you get to the real meat and potatoes of Relink. It’s a genuinely fantastic game with a great main story, but that’s not where most of the focus will be with your play time. If you can get your friends interested, you can have an even better time with the challenge content, whether it’s the bonus quests or bosses. It looks fantastic, plays great, and it’s full of phenomenal music.

If Granblue Fantasy: Relink had your attention before but you never took the plunge, there legitimately isn’t a better version of the game to play than Endless Ragnarok. If you just want the main story, you won’t get the most out of the game, but if you’re in it for the long haul, Cygames has you covered with an absurd amount of fun and an enjoyable game.
