As you may have noticed in our Gift Guide, my obsession with handhelds has easily survived the Vita’s demise. And this week, we got another entry in the increasingly crowded handheld market, as the Evercade EXP finally arrived in stores.
Of course, what sets the Evercade EXP (as well as its predecessor, the Evercade handheld, and their home console, the Evercade VS) apart from all those other handhelds is that this one is built for cartridges rather than downloads, so anyone who misses the days of physical media will be able to build up a physical collection for this new handheld as well. However, the EXP differs a little from the other Evercade systems in that, as we previously reported, it includes a pre-loaded Capcom collection that includes Street Fighter II, Ghouls ?n Ghosts, Mega Man, and about a dozen other games. There’s also a TATE mode that allows you to play the handheld vertically, if you’re a shmup buff.
And the EXP’s release wasn’t without a bit of criminal drama, either. Last week, Evercade announced that a robber had targeted their stock of limited edition versions of the console. The company is working with British police to track down the missing EXP units, and in the meantime they’re remanufacturing those for anyone who ordered one.

With the touch of a button, the selected game will turn 90 degrees clockwise to display in the vertical orientation, and the new TATE buttons on the left of the device now control your game. Simply hold the console on its side and enjoy great games like 1942, 1943, Mercs and more in the most authentic way possible. There are 21 games that are best played in TATE mode across Evercade!
Each Evercade EXP comes with the IREM Arcade 1 Cartridge collection to start your Evercade cartridge library. With 6 great arcade originals like R-Type, In The Hunt and Moon Patrol, you can get into classic arcade gaming straight away. This comes in a numbered box and includes the game cartridge and a full colour manual.
In addition to that, each Evercade EXP also comes with bonus content built into the device. 18 Capcom games are included without the need for installation, code redemption or cartridge! 14 arcade greats and 4 home console classics can now go with you anywhere you want to go! A full colour manual is also included for the Capcom collections.
