Shadow of the Tomb Raider gets real-time ray tracing thanks to NVIDIA RTX

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is gearing up to possibly be one of the best looking video games yet, thanks to the announcement that the title will support NVIDIA’s advanced RTX platform which will provide PC gamers with, for apparently for the first time, real-time ray tracing.

Get a look at a PC tech trailer below and some new Gamescom screens too for a better look on what to expect from the game’s visuals.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider ? PC Technology Trailer [ESRB]:

Shadow of the Tomb Raider – Gamescom screens:

Square Enix, Eidos-Montr?al, and Crystal Dynamics announced today that Shadow of the Tomb Raider is being developed on the NVIDIA RTX platform and will be among the first games to feature real-time ray tracing as a rendering technique. The stunning results can be seen in the worldwide premiere of a Shadow of the Tomb Raider technology trailer released for Gamescom 2018.

Kicking off Gamescom, attendees will have the opportunity to experience firsthand Shadow of the Tomb Raider with playable demos at the GeForce Gaming Celebration taking place in Cologne on Aug. 20 and 21. Meanwhile, NVIDIA will host a behind-closed-doors, first-time playable demo of Shadow of the Tomb Raider using real-time ray tracing on PC.

?We had an excellent partnership with NVIDIA on Rise of the Tomb Raider,? said Rich Briggs, Senior Brand Director at Crystal Dynamics. ?Now, thanks to NVIDIA RTX technology, we are pleased to announce that Shadow of the Tomb Raider will, quite fittingly, feature real-time shadows.?

?An iconic pop culture figure like Lara Croft deserves the cinematic treatment that ray tracing can deliver,? said Tony Tamasi, senior vice president of content and technology at NVIDIA. ?As soon as we first experienced NVIDIA RTX in our lab, it was clear that Square Enix, Eidos-Montr?al, and Crystal Dynamics would be ideal partners to debut it with.?

The Cutting Edge of 3D Graphics Technology
Real-time ray tracing is an innovative rendering technique in the PC version of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, available on the Steam marketplace. Long considered the definitive solution for realistic and lifelike lighting, reflections, and shadows, ray tracing offers a level of realism far beyond what is possible using traditional rendering techniques. Ray tracing has been used for years to pre-render life-like worlds in movies. Until now, it has been too demanding to be practical for real-time, interactive gaming, which requires fast frame rates and low latency.

The use of real-time ray tracing in Shadow of the Tomb Raider is made possible by NVIDIA?s new GeForce RTX line of graphics processing units (GPUs), which debuted at Gamescom. Built on NVIDIA?s new Turing architecture, GeForce RTX GPUs combine light ray acceleration, artificial intelligence, and programmable shading to make real time ray tracing possible in games for the first-time ever. GeForce RTX GPUs reinvent gaming graphics with RT Cores to accelerate ray tracing and Tensor Cores for artificial intelligence (AI) inferencing. GeForce RTX GPUs come loaded with next-generation GDDR6 memory, support for DirectX 12 features and more. The next generation gaming GPU family – the GeForce RTX 20 Series, includes the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, 2080, and 2070.
