Nidhogg 2 takes a stab at a PS4 release in 2017

Nidhogg was a bit of a unique animal when it first hit the PS4, PS3, PS Vita and PC back in 2014.

With pixelated retro graphics and intense 2 player fencing action, the original Nidhogg certainly stood out from the pack when it was first announced. Now that we have the sequel headed to the PS4 (titled Nidhogg 2 natch), things just got a whole lot weirder.

The super simple monochromatic figures have been upgraded with a totally new art style and some crazy animation, there are new moves, multiple weapons to dangerously swing around, and apparently bursting out of a nidhogg’s butt is a normal thing.  There will be local and online play, and single player support that allows players to duke it out against the A.I., and more.

We’re definitely excited to check it out… and if you happen to be in in the San Francisco, CA area on Saturday, November 5th, the game will be available for some hands-on at the Day of the Devs event in booth #30 and on the main stage at one point.

See the trailer and screens and the announcement below, and check out the official site, here.

Nidhogg 2 screens:

The next installment in the award-winning game of stabby duelists, Nidhogg 2 is coming to PlayStation 4 in all its sword-swinging, axe-throwing, face-stomping glory in 2017.

Want to see what it’s like to go inside a dying nidhogg and come out its butt? Silly question?of course you do! Check out the new screenshots here.

Fill your opponent with arrows, chuck a knife into its groin, smash its face into juicy goop, or even kick it old-school with your trusty sword. Nidhogg 2 is busting open the floodgates with a bunch of new moves and weapons, each with its own playstyle for dispatching foes.

Here’s a bit of what you can expect in Nidhogg 2:

  • Completely overhauled animations with monstrous art from Toby Dixon.
  • 10+ levels of fencing goodness, including multiplayer (local/online) and tournament mode.
  • Challenge the AI in single-player, including special challenge rounds.
  • New soundtrack with music by Mux Mool, Dose One, Daedelus, and more.
