Nintendo Direct reveals game details, dates, Wii Remote Plus, new Kirby game and more

A new Nintendo Direct went up today, detailing upcoming releases for both the Wii U and 3DS this holiday season. Lots of known quantities on display, including Super Mario 3D World coming November 22nd, A Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds also coming November 22nd, along with a host of third-party titles over the next coming months with games like Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag and LEGO Marvel Super Heroes.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, previously announced for December of this year, has now been pushed back to February 14th. A new trailer was unveiled for Super Mario 3D World, which looks pretty fantastic in my opinion.

New information was unveiled regarding The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, showcasing an attempt to drop the standard Zelda formula and replace it with a more open style of design. Players can now visit any dungeon found in the world, and instead of finding items like a grappling hook or boomerang, will be able to purchase or rent those items at any time.

A new Kirby title was announced for the Nintendo 3DS, but without an official title or exact release date. Nintendo also talked about the Wii U system update that went live late last night, which you may have already downloaded. One big addition, besides performance enhancements for the OS, is the ability to output audio and video from the Wii mode to the GamePad screen. Wii control functions do not transfer to the GamePad however, still requiring a Wii Remote or Classic Controller in order to play Wii games on the small screen.

For the first time in the Mario & Sonic series, players from around the world can take the action online and compete with others from around the world (broadband Internet access required). Wii Party U: House Party mode places the focus on the Wii U system’s GamePad controller and couples its use with the Wii Remote controllers in unique, engaging and social ways. In Water Runners, for example, players scoop water from a stream displayed on the GamePad and must skillfully carry the water to a pitcher displayed on the TV. The game launches Oct. 25. The physical version of the game includes a Wii Remote Plus controller and the new Horizontal Stand for the Wii U GamePad, which allows players to use the GamePad in a more balanced and comfortable fashion with GamePad-exclusive Tabletop games such as Tabletop Baseball.
