PlayStation Vita gets a price cut to $199; Borderlands 2, FEZ and more announced

At Sony’s Gamescom 2013 conference, Sony announced that the PlayStation Vita will finally be getting a bit of a price adjustment to $199.99 and 199 Euros (for both Wi-Fi and 3G models). We already saw that a number of retailers have marked the portable down in recent days, so it’s not that much of a surprise.

Memory cards are also getting a price cut, with the new prices announced as: 4GB for $14.99 (was $19.99), 8GB $19.99 (was $29.99), 16GB $39.99 (was $59.99) and 32GB for $79.99 (was $99.99).

They also announced that Borderlands 2, FEZ, Murasaki Baby and a selection of other indie and retail games are on the way to the platform.

Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC (SCEA) today announced that the PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) system is now available for $199.99 (MSRP) in North America, as a wealth of new games are set to launch for the platform starting this fall. The new price, down from the original launch price of $249.99 for the Wi-Fi model and $299.99 for the 3G/Wi-Fi model, applies to all PS Vita systems available at retail, including the limited edition PS Vita The Walking Dead bundle launching this week. SCEA will also reduce the price of the PS Vita memory cards up to 33 percent, as shown in the chart below.

New Suggested Retail Price (USD/CAD) Previous Suggested Retail Price (USD/CAD)
North America PS Vita Wi-Fi model $ 199.99 $ 249.99
PS Vita 3G/Wi-Fi model $ 199.99 $ 299.99
Memory Card for PS Vita 4GB $ 14.99 $ 19.99

“PlayStation Vita’s new price makes it an even more compelling value for gamers looking for the ultimate in portable gaming,” said Guy Longworth, Senior Vice President, PlayStation Brand Marketing at SCEA. “With a strong holiday lineup, including the first PS Vita games from critically acclaimed developers Guerrilla Games and Media Molecule, plus integration with the highly anticipated PlayStation 4, now is the perfect time to become a PlayStation Vita owner.”

With its physical controls, high-performance CPU / GPU, and 5-inch OLED touchscreen, the PS Vita system continues to provide an unmatched experience that gamers can take with them wherever they go. The content offering on PS Vita has never been stronger, with more than 900 games available on PSN as well as the PlayStation Plus membership program that offers an Instant Game Collection, PlayStation Store discounts, and exclusive features in North America.

Along with the new price, SCEA is currently celebrating the PS Vita system with two promotions on PS Store. The Japanese Game Sale, running until August 26, offers discounts of up to 50 percent off on select PS Vita games from Japanese developers, including Metal Gear Solid HD Collection and Muramasa Rebirth. PS Plus members can enjoy up to 75 percent off in the Japanese Game Sale. In addition, four of the summer’s most anticipated PS Vita titles will launch as part of the PS Vita Summer Select promotion, running from August 20 to September 16, with launch week discounts of 20 percent off select games for PS Plus members. Games featured in the Summer Select promotion include Spleunky from Mossmouth, Dragon Fantasy Book II from Muteki Corporation, Divekick from Iron Galaxy, and Kickbeat from Zen Studios.

In the coming months, more than 50 exciting new titles are slated to launch on the PS Vita system, including God of War Collection from SCE Worldwide Studios (WWS), Rayman Legends from Ubisoft, Killzone Mercenary from SCE WWS / Guerrilla Games, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate from Warner Brothers Interactive, and Tearaway from SCE WWS / Media Molecule. Independent development remains strong on PS Vita, and gamers can look forward to playing unique games from indie developers such as Luftrausers from Vlambeer and Proteus from Curve Studios.

Looking ahead, the PS Vita system will be the ultimate companion device to the PlayStation 4 (PS4) system when the entertainment system launches this holiday through key features like “Remote Play.” This innovative feature allows many PS4 games to be streamed on PS Vita at home via Wi-Fi, wrapping gamers in their favorite content on PS Vita’s vibrant 5-inch high-definition screen.
