Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze announced for Wii U [UPDATE: Screens]

One big surprise coming out of the Nintendo Direct his morning was the announcement that Retro Studio’s has been working on a follow-up to the excellent Donkey Kong Country Returns for Wii. This new title, launching for Wii U later this year, is called Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

The reveal trailer included below shows off a lot of familiar Donkey Kong Country elements, but in fantastic HD detail. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong return, but it looks like long-time Donkey Kong Country fans will have a few other surprises in store when the game hits store shelves later this year.

It is somewhat disappointing that Retro wasn’t working on something brand new, or another Nintendo IP, but it’s really hard to argue against a sequel to one the best platformers of the last decade. Check out the brand new trailer below.

UPDATE: New screens.
