In what seems like an unlikely pairing, developer Obsidian Entertainment announced that they?ll be teaming up with Matt Stone and Trey Parker for a South Park RPG to be released by THQ sometime in 2012. This reveal comes from Game Informer, with a January issue cover reveal.
If Obsidian sounds familiar to long-time gamers, there?s good reason for that. These folks were behind the recent Fallout: New Vegas. They were also responsible for Knights of the Old Republic II on the original Xbox, and were behind both Alpha Protocol for SEGA and Dungeon Siege III for Square Enix in the past couple of years. Needless to say, these guys have put out an RPG or two since their beginnings in 2003.
South Park hasn?t had the best video game showing as of yet. There was the tepid shooter on Nintendo 64, PC, and original Playstation, and the downright awful quiz game Chef?s Luv Shack, followed by the racing title South Park Rally. Another South Park title has been in development for XBLA, which will hopefully be better than the last XBLA title featuring the license.
Still, despite the shortcomings of previous South Park games, I can?t help but be a little excited to see how this turns out. Obsidian hasn?t made anything I?d call a smash hit, but I certainly enjoyed both Dungeon Siege III and Fallout: New Vegas. It?s nice to see a notable developer taking the reins on the project, and I?m curious to see what comes of it. I assume we?ll learn more once that January issue of Game Informer hits stands, which should be soon.
