 Resident Evil: Code Veronica X
Yes, it's still scary.
Released back in 2002 for the PS2, Resident Evil: Code Veronica X was a director’s cut to the Dreamcast original. Now the GameCube receives a direct port of that version to complete the entire RE franchise just before the upcoming Resident Evil 4. The visuals are dated, particularly compared to the RE remake and RE Zero. But the game still manages to pants off you.

Code Veronica revolves around brother and sister zombie hunters Chris and Claire Redfield. Each character’s adventure is separated on 2 discs, but players must start out with Claire’s section. Claire is caught by Umbrella after sneaking into its Paris facility and thrown onto an unknown island. As soon as she escapes her shackles, terror ensues with zombies and monsters crawling left and right on the island.

The visuals remain exactly the same from their Dreamcast/PS2 counterpart. The polygon models, which were great at the time on Dreamcast, look pretty plain and undetailed compared to the recent titles on GameCube. Still the game models gritty 3D environments and creepy zombies.

The controls suffer a bit with the GameCube controller. The analog pad doesn’t feel quite right without real analog control, and the D-pad is too small to maneuver well. The camera stick can be used to do a quick turn, but it’s much easier to push B and the opposite direction to perform it.

The sounds are the same as the previous releases. Atmospheric creeks and unnerving zombie moans still manage to give you the chills. The music is standard for any RE title – orchestral and moody.

The real treat for die-hard RE fans are deleted scenes that were cut from the Dreamcast version and saved for this edition. The deleted scenes include Claire getting smacked by Wesker and an extended fight between Chris and Wesker.

There’s no question that RE: Code Veronica is a dated title. The third release of the game is just a port and only for people who have never played it. All others need not apply.
